On the Cult of Personality and Its Consequences

February 25, 1956

It is my honour to have you, the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, join me tonight. I have gathered you here today in this closed session to formally denounce Joseph Stalin, the cult of personality he had fostered, and the crimes he had perpetrated. These crimes included execution, torture, and imprisonment of loyal members of the communist party on false charges. Stalin is responsible for foreign policy errors, the failures of Soviet agriculture, for ordering mass terrors, and the German occupation of huge amounts of Soviet territory. We must destroy the image of the late dictator as an infallible leader and to revert official policy to an idealised Leninist model.
